Supporting the creation of a sustainable and skilled workforce

The Training and Skills Commission is established under the Training and Skills Development Act 2008 (TSD Act) to assist, advise and make recommendations to the Minister responsible for vocational education and training (VET) on the skills and workforce development priorities for South Australia. The current Minister is the Hon David Pisoni MP, Minister for Innovation and Skills.

The role and functions of the Commission are specified in the TSD Act and are both strategic and regulatory in nature.

The Commission provides independent, strategic advice on how South Australia can invest in a sustainable, highly skilled workforce, particularly in key growth sectors. This advice is developed through direct consultation with industry and the community.

Under the TSD Act, the Commission is also responsible for regulating apprenticeships and traineeships in South Australia.

The Commission also has standing committees – a Traineeship and Apprenticeship Committee, which advises the Commission in relation to Part 4 of the TSD Act (apprenticeships and traineeships), and eight Industry Skills Councils (ISCs). ISCs were established from 1 January 2019 to provide a strengthened voice, directly to government, on the skills and training needs of industry.
